what is bike sharing?
Bike sharing and community bike programs aim to provide free or low cost public access to bicycles for inner-city transportation. The bikes are identifiable by their distinct paint job and are meant to be used for a period of time and then left for somebody else to use. These programs provide environmentally friendly transportation options to communities. Bike share programs have been implemented in cities all over the world including; Helsinki and Copenhagen and in the Netherlands, Lyon, Paris, London, Barcelona and Portland, Oregon. UBC was home to the first Vancouver bike share program, and on June 27, the Vancity Bike Share embarks on an experiment to bring the idea of bike sharing to the rest of Vancouver. Who knows – this could be the start of something bigger…
