Many of the aging homes on large lots in Delta could be converted into 3 smaller innovative fee simple homes. Alternatively the existing home could be converted into 3 strata title homes which would not require strata fees. Empty-nesters could become a micro developers, and build their retirement home in their own neighborhood. This could make home ownership affordable again in Delta and other areas of Metro-Vancouver.
Making sandwiches all day seems like a peaceful enough job. In the background I can hear many different hums and beeps: the radio, chopping, boiling, refrigeration, customers and so on. None of this bothers me in the slightest. There is one sound that stands out above all else: the ceaseless drip of our kitchen faucets.
Out of curiosity and frustration, I put a large measuring cup under the drip and left it for a half-hour. Then, with much multiplying and division, I came out with this: 7117.5 gallons of water are wasted from that one tap each year. This needs to stop, and I'm going to do it.
I have a great sense of freedom when I am liberated from material goods. I don't feel tied down or obligated to have lots of stuff.
I want to stream-line and get back to basics.
Do I really need all this stuff? I want to look at where it came from and why I thought I needed it. I also want to re-examine where it will go after I am done with it, and where it will end up.
This process will hopefully not only de-clutter my physical space, but also my mental space- what a nice feeling it will be when I can breathe in and not be suffocated by all this stuff!!
I pledge to help the 260 housing co-ops in BC with over 14,000 households to find sources of funding to do green retrofits to reduce energy use and GHGs, and help make BC a world leader in environmental action from grassroots to business to government.
