No More Plastic Bags!

During my peaks of recycling enforcement, I can be found on the bus toting a garbage bag of recycling I have collected or lecturing my mom about her burn pile. I'll be honest with you, I tend to get a little dramatic and just a tiny bit carried away.

What struck me recently in my listening to folks' WGWT moments in that age is not a factor in recognizing the opportunity to do good work.

Here's an interview I did with Hannah on a recent speaking engagement in Victoria , from Winnipeg, her home.

Begin writing a book about ordinary ecoheroes

Change topics:

I have an idea for a book documenting ordinary "ecoheroes/heroines" in our midst, particularly in the Lower Mainland. That is people who are making a difference to the world and the environment, taking action, not just talking.

Everywhere!

It feels like a punch in the heart when I read about the reports of hundreds of monks being massacred and tortured in Burma. I just don't understand it. I feel helpless and confused. But my spirits were lifted a bit when I learned that people are learning about this and speaking out, over 584,000 people have already signed an online petition (organizers are hoping to reach a million this week) and an International Day of Action is being planned for this Saturday (see below).

Still, the situation in Burma remains desperate, Burma's rulers have also

Try out Change Everything

This has been a bad year so far; loosing three of four friends who were diagnosed with cancer. When you lose so many so fast it really leaves large holes in your heart so this takes time to heal. (I have a much better appreciation for all those who lost so many in the AIDS crisis in North America).

It makes a difference for that one starfish ...

Written by Catherine Ludgate

The Starfish Rescuers

Once upon a time, there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work.

One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to catch up.

As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean.

He came closer still and called out "Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?"

The young man paused, looked up, and replied "Throwing starfish into the ocean."

"I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" asked the somewhat startled wise man.

To this, the young man replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die."

Upon hearing this, the wise man commented, "But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can't possibly make a difference!"

At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, "It made a difference for that one."
