A Family Built with Vancity. Growing up, I watched my mother and father struggle with a new family. Both new in their careers, it was Vancity that gave them a mortgage to buy their first home. Since then, they have advanced in their careers, put myself through University, saw me off into my career, put my younger brothers through school, and built upon their home. Along the way, it was always Vancity that offered support, whether it be through RRSP, RESP, or investments, a line of credit, or community events that bring us all together.
I stand firm with Vancity, as a community credit union, amongst a world of other banks that are less friendly. We need our Vancity Credit Union.
Watching my family grow, through generations, and watching them prosper, is another one of the reasons that I am Excited to be running for the 2011 Elections to the Vancity Board of Directors. Thank you for your support,
Dave Cote
For a deeper perspective and greater context, here's an article by Howard Zinn, a veteran activist for progressive causes (whole article at http://www.peace.ca/ongettingalong.htm ) I find it poignant and relevant for us progressives at this juncture:
Our rivers and the very future of public power for the benefit of the people and for the people are at risk in this election. The Run of River private power projects (PPP) are a hoax, and a power grab. We must oust the current government on May 12 if we care about these issues.
I'm a little cynical of the unbridled optimism of websites like this becuase they just seem really self serving. "I want to run more"? Who cares. Just run more. We don't need to be updated on your progress. Or maybe we do, I don't know. Maybe my pessimism is just too strong, afterall, there a couple of really good ideas on here. For example, creating a community farm in the Westend of Vancouver? I've always wanted to do that. I'd want to change the economy so that it incorporated all the externalities that autisitic economics omits and create a commons similar to the Green Party platform of Genuine Progress in which a trust would be created that included the sky, the soil, water, arts and culture that everyone would pay into. The individuals and corporations that benefited the commons would recieve a dividends check, the polluters would have to pay more.
