Giving Old Trees New Life
2011-03-19 12.07.39.jpg

There's a tiny patch of trees that rest between the Island Hwy and Metral Drive in North Nanaimo. This is an area I pass several times a day on my way home. I've seen people from the neighbouring houses use it as a dumping zone for yard waste. McDonald's and Tim Horton's litter the outer-skirts and there's a wide trail that winds through it.

Support the Tyee Fellowship and Fund Independent, Investigative Journalism in BC!

The Tyee is fundraising to create four Investigative and Reporting Fellowships, grants we give to journalists to finance in-depth analysis of important issues in BC. Previous Tyee Fellowships have broken major stories, empowered citizens, and won national awards. They've uncovered dangerously inadequate dams on the Fraser River, argued for cheap public transit, explored the possibilities for improving our schools, brilliantly advocated for toxic-free job sites, and have chronicled the local urban farming revolution. Once we've raised the money - we have $3,500 to go and eight days left to find it - journalists can apply by proposing their ideas, which will be reviewed by an independent panel of judges. Anyone who donates to the Fellowship can suggest ideas and be entered to win one of three fantastic prizes. Visit http://thetyee.ca/About/Donate/ to help fund fiesty, fresh, investigative journalism in BC!

Ride my bicycle farther, longer - increase my range and rely less on buses

Written by David Yates

I already bike everywhere with an almost-maniacal devotion. Is it my very strong desire to avoid being crammed armpit-to-armpit in one of Vancouver's over-heated buses, or the fact that I don't have to wait, and parking is easy? I sold my car when I moved to Vancouver three years ago and have been a bike nut ever since!

...or so I thought! Now I realize that my range is quite small - from my home near Fraser and Broadway to downtown, west to Alma, east to Renfrew, and south to 41st. That's it. I've never biked, say, to the North Shore, east to Burnaby or New West, or further south than Marine Drive. I'd like go on significantly longer bike trips some day (Seattle? Portland? California?) and that means getting used to having my bum planted firmly on a bike seat for longer than 30 minutes.

So, I'm going to ride farther and longer and expand my cycling range both physically and - probably even more importantly - mentally! I'd like to start in the next week and ride the new Greenway route from Vancouver to New West. Can't wait!

EFT - heals when all else fails

the End of Creating Dis-ease

Here's one of my personal stories about healing my badly twisted, splintered, or broken ankle with EFT: I was reading something as I stepped off a curb last Sunday from taking the new dell laptop into get it fixed. (a whole nother story?!?) My left foot twisted all the way over, and it seemed that the sole of my foot was facing the SKY!?!? Man did I TWIST IT!??!?
