My family is disillusioned by the common North American lifestyle of rampant consumerism and wasteful energy consumption. Our long-term goal is to live off the grid, but in the meantime we have decided to life as simply and self-sustainably as possible in our current suburban surroundings.

98% of the snow is gone now, although we'll probably get another storm in May. We've agreed on a location for the new compost bin and agreed on raising and increasing the size of the veg garden beds this year. All the building materials are reclaimed from a neighbour who replaced his fence last fall.

Step 1 - waiting for the snow to melt

We're itching to get out in the yard after a winter of heavy snow. We have a list of about 20 things to do right away and all require clear ground. At the moment there is still a hump of snow under a tree that needs medical attention, and the ladybugs have yet to come out of the ground cover in the front garden.
