I would like to volunteer for an environmental organization

I am reading an excellent book on climate changed entitled "Heat," by George Monbiot. Granted, it seems like everyone and their dog is writing a book on climate change recently, but this one is excellent. It is written with cutting wit; is  meticulously researched, and scathing in its criticisms, while wielding an unmatched optimism and faith in the power of the human spirit to endure under conditions of hardship.

I'm a graduate student at UBC studying environmental sustainability, though really I am studying sustainability, of which the environment and our relationship to it is just one piece.

I was in a discussion group today dissecting modern history, and analyzing the nature and roots of the modern environmental critique. We were discussing the future, and the best way forward for the human race, and we were discussing whether incremental, technocratic changes to our behavior, thinking, policies, lifesteyle were really the root of the problem that we have created for ourselves. Will a carbon tax really save us? If I recycle am I a good person? If we create more greenspace can we preserve biodiversity? These are incremental approaches to our problems. But perhaps the problem is much deeper seated. Perhaps the problem is about who we have become, and who we think we are.
