help those who are unable to help themselves...in small ways or large

Many of us still manage to cook a meal at home every so often.  Those of us residing in urban areas also are very familiar with the men and women with their buggies and dogs who camp in outdoor courtyards, garbage enclosures, doorways etc. who won't go to shelters because that would mean losing everything they own in the world.  Why not make a little extra dinner from time to time and share with these particular neighbours?  Some will turn you down, but many will gratefully accept (with suprising manners!).  Be sensible about it (I have a neighbour with me if I'm out past dark) but I have yet to be fearful of these guys, in fact often one of them will be more concerned with my well-being in the cold than their own.  One or two hot plates every so often doesn't seem like a big deal, but if many people do it, those dinners will go a long way towards helping these guys through what looks like a formidable winter to come.
