I want to reduce our company's overall climate impact, reduce energy consumption, make us more efficient and profitable, and communicate the changes to our customers and stakeholders.
So, a little over a month ago I started my vermiculture experiment at work, and it looks like it is a failure. I get way too much food scraps for the worms to work through, I would have to build a worm tower to accommodate all the material.
So, I decided to relocate the balcony worms to my office, I hope they'll all get along. It was just to disturbing to see dead worms all over my balcony every morning...
So this morning I woke up to find that a mass exodus of worms happened overnight, from my composting bin out on the balcony. Not a pretty sight before breakfast, and quite disturbing. After mourning the couple of dozen worms that tried unsuccessfully to escape to a better life, I found out that this is not unusual and has nothing to do with my animal husbandry skills.
I am getting my worms on Saturday, finally! I am so looking forward to start composting!
At work I have requested to establish a "Reuse" area, where staff can drop off/pick up unwanted office supplies.
My plan to do an energy audit may have to be put on hold or abandonned alltogether. With two leased offices and three home offices, getting all the necessary information together is almost impossible...
I bought a small composting kit for our office. It came with a plastic bucket, compostable bags, and a book. I very quickly realized that I had no idea how composting works. I thought I'd put some kitchen scraps in the bin and after a little while, voila, I have sweet-smelling soil! Lots to learn, I'm taking a composting course this weekend.
My proposal to "green" our company has been accepted, now the work starts. Yikes, where to begin!
I think an energy audit is probably a good place to start. The difficulty is that we have two main offices (one in the West and one in the East) and three satellite offices...
More online research is in order, my new favourite book "Doing Business in a New Climate" will help tremendously.
