getting out of consumerism and giving back to those so desperately in need.

Though not religious ourselves, I found a website where you can give charitable donations on behalf of your friends and loved ones. (Give a goat, breeding chickens, fresh water, medical or school supplies..the list is extensive.) I couldn't say no to the whole idea.
