I'd always heard that boys were late to potty train, and Ivan was late in walking. So we didn't really plan on starting this until he was a little older than 21 months. But he's been pointing to his diaper whenever he, um, elimiantes a solid. So, we bought a potty and are getting a book for him about it and we'll see what happens. It'll be nice not to be using diapers, which are destructive (cloth diapers gave him a horrible rash). Plus, it'll be nice not to have to deal with his 'production' so often.

Prepare yourself for a piece of advice that will have you cursing my name: the video "Once Upon a Potty" did wonders for us. It comes in girl and boy versions, has a guide for parents, and is a delivery system for the most pernicious, insidious children's song ever written.
Oh, it'll help Ivan learn to use the toilet... but "Yes I'm Going To The Potty, Potty" will haunt your dreams. You'll find yourself humming it on your walk to work. Snatches of the lyrics will drift out of your mouth, unbidden, during crucial high-level meetings.
