Running for the Board of Vancity
I have been inspired by the positive change and empowering work of the people of Vancity for years. The list of contributions and incredibly valuable innovations that Vancity is directly responsible for is huge – not the least of which is unending support and help to build the Co-operative Auto Network.
I’ve always known that I need to repay that debt.
Running for the Board (and hopefully succeeding in my bid!) is a step in that direction. I believe I have a wealth of personal experience and expertise that I can lend to the Board as they continue to offer a financial institution that is leading edge and responsible to its members, the community and the environment.
The trend toward Vancity’s backing of social enterprises and small business entrepreneurship is invaluable to the region. It is to reinforce these objectives that I will be a great asset to the Board. I know what it takes to build a great community asset and understand, from a lot of first-hand experience founding the car co-op and leading development of what is now an Olympic Legacy organization, the needs of the individuals who are taking the risks and making it happen.
Taking risks isn’t new to me – but running for a Board of this calibre certainly is! It’s a little nerve-racking but I do look forward to the learning curve. And – hopefully – having the opportunity to give back to an organization that means a lot.
