Day 1 - Bikeshare Launch
Day 1
Wow - that launch event was great! Was so fun to see the sea of 45 riders heading off with these sweet bikes. So many people stopped and chatted with me about the bikes and the bikeshare experiment. I brought the bike up into my office and literally had a line-up of people at my desk inquiring about how to get involved.
So, came the time for my very first Vancouver bike commute.... I have to say, I felt way more cool in a red t-shirt, red helment, and red bike when I was with 44 of my peers. All on my own I felt a big silly at first, but then one girl cruised past me on her bike and called back "Nice Outfit!" ... I think she really meant it as "Hey, that's cool" not "Quirky weirdo".
Highlight: Taking a trip through Strathcona, which I normally don't see. Man, is it ever an amazing area of town... all the cool old houses, many of which have been restored. Oh yeah, and the interview on the Bill Good show... that was pretty darn cool too. I felt like a bit of a celebrity.
Lowlight: One gear = Lactic acid (read: pain). Call me a wussie pants, but even the smallest hills (from the distance) sure crept up on me. I can see this will be a start of a "get in shape" regime.
Time: Basically indentical to taking the skytrain! That one surprised me. (This even counts an ever so small portion of actually pushing my bike up one of those yicky hills... hee hee.)
Until tomorrow...
