Big Box or Financial doom?

Written by theoriginalreggie

Why is everyone so dead set against Walmart coming to Salmon Arm? Oh yeah...C O M P E T I T I O N. GOD FORBID! Understand that...if more people are working - then more people will spend money and more taxes will be collected. There-by creating a better local economy. It's unfortunate that some will be eaten up by the big box community - but that just means you are barely hanging in there now. So why keep suffering? LET IT HAPPEN...It will be for the good! I watched this happen is Dawson Creek and was surprised at how BIG Dawson grew! from 11000 to 16000 almost overnight! It was successful and many local businesses GREW as well...Oh sure a few went down and blamed Walmart...but according to locals - they weren't that steady anyway!
COME ON - TIME TO CHANGE!!!

**addition**

My only real concern was the increase of jobs in this city. There are a lot of retired people that would drive to Vernon to go to Walmart but don't seem to think they need it here. How is this environmentally green? And these people dont need work. I will say that I may not be totally accurate about what I put about Dawson - but I did see quite an increase in employment. I also tend to stay away from the conspiracy stuff as not a lot of it is totally true. Business is business...Competetion is needed to keep the economy flowing.

I don't live in Salmon Arm

I don't live in Salmon Arm so I respect your right to feel strongly about Walmart's benefits and acknowledge that it impacts you more than me. I would however ask you to think about how much Walmart buys within 100 miles of Salmon Arm or even BC and therefore ask you to consider where the money in this "grown" economy eventually goes? Does it build an economy to have more people paid less and have most of the money go to suppliers outside the region?

Then there is the environmental impact of shipping the goods that replace the locally provided alternatives and the waste that they produce and the genericizing of the community. I could go on.

If it were me I would fight against Walmart because all they bring are lower priced goods and headline employment. The overall cost of that is highly debateable and I would suggest outweighs the benefit.

By the way you suggest that Salmon Arm is dying and you cite Dawson Creek as a paragon of the Walmart benefit. I'd suggest that something else happened in Dawson Creek other than the Walmart arriving that made it Boomtown BC. Walmart has it's upsides but the saviour of an otherwise dying economy is not one of them. If they are going to Salmon Arm it's not because it is a truly failing economy so I'd take that as a positive and say "thanks for the vote of confidence but we don't need you".

I have nothing per-se against Wallmart except that I believe that their values and ways of doing business are far more aggressive, short-term and self-serving than I can approve of.

I'd also like to chime in

I'd also like to chime in about "stuff" and by that I mean all the "stuff" all the factories all over the world are churning out each day.

people are generally responsible and tend to want to take care of the things that belong to them. what i see happening is an overwhelming amount of "stuff" being produced , which is causing us to hoard it out of this sense of responsibility. "what will happen if i just throw this out?" "I cant throw this out, it is a perfectly good ______" and on and on.

we need to start to stand guard at the thresholds of our homes and start to be more vigilant about what we let in. walmart would love to supply us with an endless supply of "stuff" but where will we put it all? and when we want to turf it to make room for more "stuff" where will it go?

Hi Roop, I think however these days thats how it has to be..go big or go home..
And I know that "cluttered" feeling Kate. Again how is it Walmarts fault that people can't control thier buying habits?

Thanks for your replies.
