Mount Pleasant Pool Threatened With Demolition - TUESDAY MARCH 20 meeting
THE FOLLOWING URGENT MESSAGE COMES TO YOU FROM THE MOUNT PLEASANT POOL COMMITTEE AND MOUNT PLEASANT COMMUNITY CENTRE ASSOCIATION...
The Planning Committee of Vancouver Park Board has scheduled a very important meeting regarding Mount Pleasant Pool and Community Centre at 7 PM on Tuesday, March 20th. At the meeting, Staff are expected to recommend demolishing the pool and the centre building immediately after #1 Kingsway opens, tentatively in June 2008.

The impact on our community is that there will be insufficient time to plan/raise funds for a replacement outdoor pool facility before the "greening" of Mount Pleasant Park is implemented without a pool.
Park Board Staff seem to have an agenda to eliminate Mount Pleasant Pool despite the outcome of a long community consultation process overwhelmingly supporting the saving of the outdoor pool until we can build a new outdoor pool. A democratic motion was passed by Park Board on October 31st, 2005 to keep the outdoor pool at Mount Pleasant Park until the end of the swimming season in 2009, in order to allow the MtPCCA and community time to raise the necessary funds.

Having been off the Board of
Having been off the Board of directors for Mount Pleasant for the past two years, I was a bit alarmed to find the same questions and short-sighted answers being discussed as were presented in the fall of 2004 and spring 2005. It was disconcerting to hear the VPB report recommending demolishing the Pool, the current buildings and then 'bulldozing' (my words) the area green. Members of the community, including the President of the Local Business Association, President of the SF elementary school PAC and former parks board officials, many parents and youth experts spoke up, urging the Planning Committee to go against the Staff's recommendations. No decisions were made at this meeting on Tuesday, except a verbal declaration that the childcare services should be "seamless", without a break in their provision.
The MPCA Board and Save the Pool committee have more work to do to convince the VPB commissioners of the support and financial backing that will come from the community and surrounding areas once the VPB shows more leadership. I am willing to help! Let's spread the word and be prepared for that next decisive Parks Board mtg! Surely it makes sense to leave the building and pool AS IS.
