Watch less television
I don't want to become one of those people who tries desperately to bring up the fact that they "don't own a television" into every conversation. But on the other hand there have been times in my life when television has consumed more than its fair share of my disposable time. I would like at least to become more aware of how much time I am devoting to television, and maybe to reduce it.
To this end, during the month of October, I am going to listen to the Canucks' games on the radio instead of watching them on television. Small steps, small steps...

Have you heard that Google just bought Youtube for US$1.65 billion. Billion. You can bet that they are going to find a way to reach you with it via your computer. Watch out. You may be able to turn your TV off, but it looks like it may follow you to work.

I have accidentally found a way to avoid Youtube as well, at least at work: my main web browser does not have the Flash plugin installed, so I can't watch the videos.
In this case my stubborness and/or laziness is definitely a virtue. There is no way I'm going to bother to install that plug-in. I figure that all I'm missing out on are Flash Only sites (which are generally unusable if not outright user-hostile) and ads.

I suggest as well that in the absence of watching television that you read more, it is so much more satisfying than the brain numbing drivel that is on T.V.
I am trying to watch less T.V. as well, but instead of the T.V. my problem is the computer - I am always online - darn blogging.

Last year I also purpose-built a computer and set it up with MythTV. It's kind of like TIVO. My system can hold 300 or so hours of recorded television. It marks the comercial breaks so that I can skip them instantly. So now I don't channel-surf anymore -- I just watch something that I've recorded, without commercials, and then I turn it off.
I wouldn't call MythTV particularly user-friendly, though.

That's a fantastic idea!
That's a fantastic idea! I've been trying to cut my indulgence in the tube. Hopefully there will be strength in numbers. I'm going to try to dedicate 2 hours a night to reading instead of glass-eyeing the tv.
