So, I saw Al Gore on Saturday, Sept. 29th, here in Vancouver. I've seen the movie, but it was cool to see him in person.
One of the things I learned was that the world's oceans are on the verge of collapse! This means: no more fish, no more whales, no more dolphins, no more a lot of stuff!
So, I decided that a good thing to do would be have a fundraising dinner. I read about them in a magazine and I thought it was a good idea. I get tired of complaining about how no one does things to make the world better, and also not doing anything myself.
I am holding an electronics roundup for recycling on Sat. Sept. 8th, from 10 am to 4 pm, by donation.
And and all electronics are welcome, including: cell phones, any computer parts, tvs, any video equipment, microwaves, etc. Basically any electronics are okay. They will go to Technotrash recycling for demanufacturing and appropriate disposal.
Well, I have to be honest, I think that my apartment building has private collection, because the trash and recycling seem to be gone faster these days than it was before the strike.
So, I watched and participated in Live Earth and, of course, signed the pledge.
The funny thing about signing the pledge is that it says " I will..." . I hope a lot of people sign and follwo through. Why it was funny for me, is I already *do* all that stuff :)
I have been doiong a lot of thinking lately, and I decided that If I were mayor, these are some of the things I would do:
to help clean up our streets, get the dust and garbage off of them, I would hire more people to get out there on a daily basis to clean the streets and sidewalks.
I would get some of these people from the streets themselves; I would offer people who seem not to have jobs, who sit on the streets and ask for change a REAL change - aka a job. I would offer them training and jobs. They could take the cleaning jobs, or any training to get any type of job that THEY want. I would pay them a decent wage so that they would not need to go back to asking for change. I would also offer them life skills coaching and education [because that is one thing that I think is sorely missing].
So, as I mentioned in the change part of this site, [if the post worked] there is an event coming up on APRIL 18TH, beginning at 5:45 pm at Steamworks in Gastown called GREEN DRINKS. Apparently it is an opportunity to get out and socialize, network and exchange ideas with others who have green sensibilities [do we have green thumbs, or green souls?]
I hope !i will meet some changeeverything folks out there, since I have heard that some were particularly keen on hooking up with like-minded types.
So, tonight, April 4th, I went downtown and played this super fun game called Manhunter. It is like tag, and so I got to run around and try to hide from 'hunters' and then I chose to become one, and ran around trying to catch others. I had a blast!
Apparently this happens every Wednesday, check their website [google manhunt in vancouver] for more info.
See, I typed all of this already, and it mysteriously disappeared when i went to post it, so here I am typing it again, even though what I kinda want to do is navigate away and not come back.
1. I bought compostable trash bags.
2. I use more Choice Theory in my ESL classroom.
3. I showed the movie 'An Inconvenient Truth' to my ESL students.
4. I am taking a course in Non Violent Communication.
I wish more people would get out and donate blood. I go about every two months, and yesterday made m y 21st or 22nd donation. I started up a Partners for Life program at work, to invite and encourage the people at my company [over 100 staff] to go out and donate, and I got about 9 donors last year. 9. Well, at least it is over the average of 3 percent, but come on!
The problem is, I don't know how to cajole people in a nice way, I am not one of those people who is always smiling and surrounded by people clamoring for my attention. Well, not outside of the classroom anyway. So I have a hard time getting people to come out and give on a regular basis.
