Support farmers that treat workers fairly and safely

Like most people in Vancouver, I was shocked and saddenned by the fatal bus crash that killed 3 farm workers last week. For many, the crash highlighted the unsafe and exploitative conditions for farm workers in BC. This week, the government re-instated spot checks for vans transporting farm workers, which is a step (back!) in the right direction. I was wondering if as a consumer of local produce, I could do anything further.

So, I wrote to SPUD, who deliver my organic produce box, asking them to help. You can read my letter below, and feel free to write or talk to your grocery store if you share my concerns.

The letter:

Dear SPUD,

In the wake of last week's tragic bus crash in Abbotsford, I am writing to encourage SPUD to help ensure the safety and fair treatment of those who work on supplier's farms. I have been a SPUD customer for many years now, and have always been pleased with the quality, convenience, and ethics of your service. In the same way that SPUD works to find suppliers that meet organic standards, can we ask for assurances that farms (and the contractors who provide them with temporary labour) comply with or exceed labour and safety standards? Specifically, I would like to see SPUD supporting farms that:

  • pay workers the general hourly minimum wage
  • ensure workers are transported safely to work
  • ensure workers have access to toilets and hand washing basins
  • provide adequate, fairly priced housing for workers who reside in employer-provided accommodation

Thank you for your attention to this. I am confident that you share my concerns for worker health and safety and I look forward to your response.

Sincerely,

Sarah
