Competitive Personal Carbon Reduction?
Hi!
I'm a MBA student at the University of British Columbia and I am working on a really cool project for my summer internship. It's called “Project Blue Sky” (www.projectbluesky.ca) and it's a website that was inspired by Olympic athletes to promote sustainable travel leading up to the 2010 Olympics.
The big goal for the site is to log 1 billion kilometres of sustainable travel before March 2010...
Like me, you're probably wondering if this is ever going to happen??
Well, I do wonder that most days :)
However, I'm very optimistic and I think we can get very close to our goal (and hopefully hit it) if and when more people get involved.
Wouldn't it be cool if, as a country, we could collectively accumulate 1 billion kilometres of sustainable travel? I think that would be awesome. What would be even cooler is if we can pass on the idea to future Olympic cities (i.e - London) to see if they can also reach the goal!
Now, while this goal seems high, I believe there are many small wins throughout the journey. For example, if the website can inspire some people to leave their car at home one day a week and instead walk, bike or take transit to work, then I consider that a good thing. Hopefully by making the website more competitive, people will be more encouraged to log their entries. I think people like the opportunity to compete! Let the trash talking begin! :)
If you have some kilometres to add, then log onto our website (www.projectbluesky.ca) and add them to our giant "pedometer" (a.k.a the widget that aggregates all of the entries)!
If you have any questions or have any suggestions on how to get the word out on this project, let me know!
Ali
