Tupperware take-out

Will you be laughed at for keeping tupperware (plastic containers) in your car or your bag for when you go out to eat with friends?

Well, maybe it's worth the social hit.  The guilt that I feel when I take home food in a styrofoam container is really starting to get to me.  While handing a restaurant a plastic container for take-out orders might not be feasible, it really isn't too far-fetched to bring one for leftovers.

Also, if we could get enough environmentalists out there to work together, we could make a list of restaurants that give out food in styrofoam containers and refuse to order from them unless they start to use recyclable or reusable containers.  I've noticed that some Chinese restaurants put take-out food in these very handy reusable containers...

Who's with me?  Somebody?  Anybody?

I am with you.

Also there is an AMAZING restaurant called Radha that uses biodegradeable cutlery and containersfor all their take-out orders. The food is some of the best, yummiest food EVER, too. I go there for lunch sometimes when I forget/don't have time to bring it from home.

I've been taking a tupperware to my bagel shop in the morning so I don't get the paper bag they put it in each day (which subsequently gets greasy and can't be reused).

I don't see why this wouldn't work for leftovers, for sure. Many women carry bags large enough to easily fit one in inconspicuously. There's no need for your server to ever know, really. Tupperware with a good lid is also probably way less likely to leak than styrofoam, too.

I'll start taking a bigger handbag with me to carry my leftovers out in.

I think that taking a Tupperware container when you are going to grab take out is a great idea you can even put it in a Rock 'n' serve reheatble tupperware container less rubbish and the more everyone dose this the more normal it will be. (saves the hasle of taking the garbage out)

I agree styrofoam is not the way to go with take out. Besides being nonbiodegradeable it leaks and doesn't keep things fresh. I recently found a bowl from Tupperware at http://my2.tupperware.com/DarleneBarr that folds down to frisbee size I can put in my purse and use if for my leftovers. The Chinese restaurant I go to requires you to bring your own container when you order take out. Of course, they don't deliver

I'd avoid 'rock and serve'--rubbermaid said this type of their product does indeed have BPA in it. Check out their webpage--they now have a list of all their BPA-free tupperware types. I used to have 'rock and serve' myself, but no more!

I've been bringing my tupperware to restaurants for take-out orders for a little over a year now and been getting a lot of positive responses. I often give them a heads up when I phone in the order.

I've been pushing the limit a bit recently and bringing back the same box for my weekly pizza. One employee always says "Next time, a new box, ok?", but the boss loves it.

The idea came naturally as, embarassingly, I go for pizza more often than I put out the recycling and the box was just sitting there by the door while I was on my way to pick up my order.

Care is required here to make sure that all the melted cheese and sauce stays on the wax paper they line the box with.
