Can I see one?
Do you wonder why the AIDS epidemic is called the worst epidemic in the history of mankind? Can you grasp the implications of these mind-numbing numbers from the United Nations Report on AIDS dated Dec 2005?
Children that died from AIDS in 2005 - 570,000
Women living with AIDS today - 17,500,000
Number newly infected in 2005 - 4,900,000 - over 500 per hour
Number died since 1981 when AIDS was first identified - 25,000,000
But it is not the millions but the one that is the tragedy - my one teacher, my one nurse, my one father, my one sister, my one best friend - or me.
How else can we put a human face on a faceless tyrant, a hidden enemy? And until we see ONE... we will not act.
Please help me see one.

The hidden tyrant is AIDS
The hidden tyrant is AIDS and my goal is to move people to action, by helping them consider the importance of each individual. Sometimes we get lost in the huge numbers without considering each one has a mother, child sister etc.
The numbers can sometimes overwhelm and cause people to not take action; I am seeking to encourage people that it is worthwhile, attempting to put a face on faceless stats.
Peace

Well, you asked for 'help'
Well, you asked for 'help' and I offered it. Your choice to ignore my suggestion and continue to try to change the world 'out there', is, well, your choice. But I have to say, focusing exclusively on getting everyone else to change is pretty self-righteous. I've been guilty of that more than I'd like to admit. Eventually you have to ask yourself how you expect anyone to listen to your ideas when you yourself choose to ignore the ideas of others?

Thanks for the
Thanks for the challenge. I admit you are more in tune with the ideas of others than I am.
You are right - I had to change first, to stop ignoring the problem of AIDS, to stop saying it was someone else's fault, and start taking responsibility: reading, synthesizing information and setting a goal - to encourage Canadians that we have the resources to make a real difference in the world at this time.
The vision is to see an AIDS-free world by 2020. I promise I won't ignore your ideas, or anyone's ideas, on how to accomplish this vision.
So please offer all the ideas you have on that subject...

I guess you have no ideas
I guess you have no ideas on this subject. A couple of months have gone by and nothing new posted.

Hmm, well this is totally
Hmm, well this is totally not anywhere near even close to being on my radar. This was your vision pal. I simply said I'd support you by offering feedback on your ideas. I happen to think it's pretty naive goal. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't offer feedback, point-of-view, etc, on ideas. I'd love to be wrong. But don't wait for me to start the brainstorm session..

actually, i changed my mind.
actually, i changed my mind. i do have something coming up:
alot of resources are going into 'education'. that's the progressive solution for everything; education. let's teach the young african men how to use condoms. the problem is not education, the problem is belief, and the general level of understanding and interpreting the world around them. this is capacity for comprehension - NOT content/information/knowledge, or education.
what was the film fest movie with the nun's that went over to do missionary work, and the young nun had to have sex with the plantation owner to keep the thing going? crap i forget. good movie, somebody help me out on the title. anyway, it illustrated the fact that most young african males believe that if you have sex with a virgin, you'll be cured of aids.
what you have to do is infiltrate the belief system. like viral marketing (sorry about that horrendous pun). but you have to reach the more highly developed individuals (first you have to learn how to recognize them), and convince them that no, it's not sex with virgins, it's the juice from the skin of bananas, or some shit - something other than sex with virgins. you'd want to research how that rumour started in the first place, and steer it in a different direction using believable propoganda. but it has to happen from within. in whispers and rumours that spread and penetrate the actual culture. not white people showing up with little rubbers trying to 'educate'. we need to slow the spread, and changing that one horrific belief would do alot.
thoughts?

Thanks for your input.
Thanks for your input.
You are right, the dream of an Aids-Free World won't be accomplished with condoms, here in Canada or in Africa, India or anywhere else. It comes back to one's belief system.

That ONE is not living
That ONE is not living outside of you, Peace. You want the emotional shock of seeing a picture of some 'other' suffering, but it's not necessary, nor is it a heatlhy motivator for action. Ask yourself what is 'faceless' and 'hidden' inside of you.
