SMH PACE is Proud to be Part of the 2010 Heart of the City Festival. Our Show Celebrates the Resilience and Diversity of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

Our Show at the Firehall Arts Centre Features SMH Founder David Granirer and the Comics of SMH PACE. SMH PACE Comics Cherysse Magdalena, Gina Bombay and Jo Ann Morin Join David in Bringing the Laughter to the DTES.

Stand Up For Mental Health (SMH) is a unique Vancouver-based non-profit that teaches stand-up comedy to people with mental illness as a way of building self-esteem and breaking down stigma. SMH has programs from Halifax to Victoria.

Long-time DTES resident PACE Society provides sex worker-led and driven programs. PACE hopes to eradicate systemic issues that lead to survival sex work such as poverty, homelessness, health and addictions so that individuals can make safe, healthy and informed decision about their lives.

Vancity Member Stand Up For Mental Health (SMH) is passionate about facilitating an open, frank, inclusive and lively national discussion about mental illness on Campus. 1 IN 5 Canadians will personally deal with a mental illness in their lifetime. Nearly 100% of us will be affected collaterally through family, friends, co-workers, neighbours and others. Students and their families are a huge part of that demographic .

The SMH Days on Campus Comedy Tour 2010 kicks off Oct.4 in Halifax at Dalhousie University. We then head to U of T in Toronto, McGill and Concordia in Montreal, then back to BC and University of the Fraser Valley (UFV), University of British Columbia (UBC), Simon Fraser University (SFU), Thompson Rivers University (TRU), UBC Okanagan, University of Victoria (UVic) Vancouver Island University (VIU), Camosun College, and possibly Vancouver Community College (VCC), and Douglas College.

Our shows coincide with MIAW-National Mental Illness Awareness Week/Month and other mental health initiatives on these campuses. We discuss Youth Depression, Suicide, Eating Disorders and other critical mental health issues.

We perform for students, faculty, staff and the local community. SMH Days on Campus offers a unique platform upon which schools across Canada can share their mental health strategies, challenges and research.

Vancouver-based Stand Up For Mental Health has been Nominated for a $100,000 Pepsi Refresh Grant. Our SMH Days on Campus Comedy Tour for 2011 plans to visit 25 universities and colleges in every province across Canada. We will perform for students, faculty, staff and the community at large.

1 in 5 Canadians will personally deal with a mental illness in their lifetime. 100% of us will be collaterally affected by it. Students are a significant part of those statistics.

Stand Up For Mental Health (SMH) uses laughter to break down the prejudice, stigma and discrimination that surrounds mental illness. We use humour to empower our comics and our audiences. Laughter is our lethal and cost-effective weapon of choice.

The Committee mandate is to facilitate the standardization of training and practices used by the RCMP, all law enforcement, the Military and Corrections Canada, in dealing with people with mental illness

• SMH Workshop and Performance for the Canadian Air Force at CFB Comox January 25 (West Coast)
• SMH Workshop and Performance for the Canadian Navy and Department of Veterans Affairs at CFB Halifax in March, date tba (East Coast)
• We are doing Workshops for UBC School of Medicine in February. These workshops will be streamed live to UVIC and University of the North. SMH is an official part of the 2010 2nd Year Medical School Program, Brain and Behaviour Block at all three Universities
• The new SMH Montreal Program starts in late February
• The new SMH PACE (Prostitution Alternatives Counselling and Education Society) Program starts, date to be announced in Vancouver
• SMH is waiting for the green light to bring an SMH Pre-Release Program into William Head Prison in Victoria in the Spring
• SMH is working with the CFB Esquimalt Military Family Resource Centre and the Royal Canadian Legion to bring workshops and shows to their Island facilities
• SMH Victoria Debut Show in late April or early May. Venue and date to be announced
• SMH Vancouver Debut Show at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage Monday May 31st
• We are planning SMH Days on Campus at UBC, UFV, Simon Fraser University, Vancouver Community and Douglas College, UVIC and Camosun College in addition to Dalhousie University Halifax, McGill University Montreal, Ryerson University and University of Toronto in October
• We are planning the Second Annual SMH Island Comedy Festival in Sidney in early fall, with SMH Comics plus the Legendary Mike MacDonald and Friends. Mike, who has Bi-Polar Disorder, now lives in Los Angeles. He just returned from entertaining the Troops in Afghanistan.
