Peak Oil Meet Up Group - Preparing for the Historic "Great Turning"
As every day passes I become a little more aware of the challenges we are going to have to face very, very soon. To survive in a post-peak oil/gas environment we need to collectively learn and disseminate knowledge. Indeed, a good portion of this aforementioned knowledge is stuff that my Grandfather's generation took for granted: that's to say, growing vegetables and preserving food by canning, root cellaring, smoking and drying; concerns such as collecting and maintaining a water supply, applying first aid and using herbal lore to heal. Of course, there are rather more dare-I-say "modern" technological issues to grasp too. Things such as harnessing and storing energy from active and passive solar systems (and other renewables.)
Unfortunately, I know little or nothing of the above. Only two years ago I was a technophile, in deep denial, eagerly awaiting the next software upgrade. I thought that the future was going to be all nanobots and neural nets. Needless to say I was totally oblivious of the precipice - the one on which we are all standing. But I am learning the folksy stuff bit by bit. I am beginning to garden. I am learning high-acid canning...
If you share any of my concerns (like, you want to still be alive in fifteen years time!), I invite you to join Vancouver's latest intentional community, The Vancouver Peak Oil Meet Up Group. You can visit the page by going to the URL below:

It is my sincere wish that we may learn everything we need to know from each other (or by delving into the community at large.)
Together we can survive the hardships ahead with ingenuity, compassion and, of course, humour. Together we can lessen the impact of the figurative and literal darkness that is a world without cheap hydrocarbons.
One love,
Neil

The first meet up is April
The first meet up is April 7th at 7:00pm. A venue has not been finalised yet. The will of the group has yet to be determined, so I cannot speak for anyone except myself. But, when considering peak oil intentional communities, we will probably follow the lead of Seattle and Portland (who already have a large peak oil communities in place.) This will mean doing things like conscioussness-raising and arranging screenings of documentaries like the "End of Suburbia;" secondly, I imagine it will be about forming connections in preparing for peak. This will consist largely of implementing a mixture of green technologies as well as adopting the forgotten arts of the early 20th century. One thing is for sure: we are going to be growing a lot more of our own food.
The image was from a British Peak Oil community website. It is a "scene from the near future:" when the Saudi Ghawar oil field hits peak production and the cat is out of the proverbial bag. When no one will be able to afford to drive any more. When the rusting chassis of automobiles will be used by the dispossed as shelter.
I do not get off on this stuff by the way. I get no thrill whatsoever. I have two children and, believe me, I would rather envisage it any other way than this. But, like global warming, this will eventually pass into the common consciousness. I just hope it will not be too late...
