Sorry folks. Bad news on the Horizon. Circumstance may be about to shave a couple of billion people off of the global population figures. When considering change, we have to factor in several scenarios. We have to prepare for "the big 3" - the potential US dollar collapse, peak oil and climate change; what activists and academics call "The Perfect Economic Storm."
In a nutshell, peak oil is when half of the world's oil supply is exhausted (making it ever more expensive to produce anything from petrochemicals or just to haul food around.) If you are not familliar with the concept of peak oil then I would suggest that you watch the excellent documentary "Escape From Suburbia". Rogers Video usually carries a copy. Ask the clerk and they will find it for you. Getting clued in about this stuff may save your life and the lives of your loved ones.
Go to the website escapefromsuburbia.com for more details.
If you are in Chapters you may want to peruse the work of Richard Heinberg. Google him. Check out relocalization.net - a Vancouver based initiative.
Basically, we all need to wise up and fast. We need to grow our own food, get out of debt, create relocalization networks and prepare for punishingly hard times. We need to re-learn all that stuff our grandparents knew about: preserving food, saving heirloom seeds and composting to name a few.
Just in case you were wondering, survivalism is not the answer. To hole up with a mountain of canned beans and a shotgun will get you nothing but loneliness and flatulence!
Community-spiritedness is the one thing that may save us. Hydrogen fuel cells and the Athabasca Tar Sands will not.
