OK - one way to move towards my "change everything" goal of integrating those of us with money with those of us without, is for as many of both groups to know some of the basic resources available. Here is a partial list:
- Carnegie Centre – Heart of the community – E Hastings & Main – South West Corner
- Pigeon Park Savings – Bank for low income clients and those receiving benefits (alternative to Money Mart, etc.) – South West Corner of E Hastings & Columbia
- United We Can – Bottle recycling co-op – 000 Block E Hastings on North Side
- Pigeon Park – Gathering place for street-involved – North West Corner of Hastings and Carroll. (Notice art galleries on two of the other corners at this intersection!)
- Portland Hotel – A residence for those whose issues classify as ‘hard to house’.
- Woodwards Construction Site – Condos sold-out within the first day – Plan for mixed housing (= market + public housing, together). – North West Corner of West Hastings & Abbott.
- Youth Action Committee (YAC) / Downtown East Side Youth Activities Committee (DEYAS) facilities – services for street-involved and homeless youth – 000 Block West Cordova Street – North Side
- Gallery Gachet – Community Art Gallery – specializes in exhibiting the work of community members and artists who face mental illness – 000 Block East Cordova Street – South Side
- Bridge Women’s Housing – shelter for homeless women, especially those fleeing domestic violence – South East Corner of East Cordova & Columbia
- Harbour Light – detox facility & homeless residence & emergency shelter (Salvation Army) – 100 Block East Cordova – North Side
