(Red)emption

(Red)emption

Many of us are fans of Oprah, and certainly of Bono. As such, I was intrigued with the whole (Product)RED campaign. I love it, because it is getting urgently needed help to those who need it.

I also hate it though. I hate it because it is premised upon the notion that we need to get in order to give. In fact, we're not really giving at all. We get, and the manufacturer gives. A little.

In response a friend and I have come up with something we're calling (Red)emption.

We want to increase awareness of the problem, but also energize people with the truth that we can change the world, and that a little goes a long way.

Check it out. We can do this.

We are the ones we have been waiting for.

Yes I agree its hard to be critical of someone that is trying to do something good - raise awareness of issues in the third world.

However.... does it seem a bit off kilter that I need to consume more, buy more to help those that are in Africa.  Instead of $10 of my purchase going to help others, maybe I could just donate $100 directly to the same organization - a ten fold increase.

I like the way you think, Peace.

Of course... you could always send $90 straight to the charity, and $10 to (Red)emption!

Just an FYI...I have 2 of these shirts and bought them 1) because I like the cause and the design, and 2) it promotes awareness...I have no problem being a billboard for this...people ask about them all the time and I get a chance to bring a little more light to the cause.

I believe this promotion is a good idea because although it may not be a lot, it gets those who ordinarily wouldn't give, to do something.  If each gave only a dollar, compounded it becomes more than when they started - and there isn't anything wrong with that!

Sure thing, Lynne. That's the part (spreading awareness) we like about the campaign. Heck, my wife and I both went looking for the shirts too. (The fact that we could only find Bo(red), Hamme(red) and Ti(red), which we refuse to wear, is also telling, but I won't go off on that tangent today...)

You're also right in that it gets those who may not otherwise do anything involved. To reiterate though, there are those of us who don't want giving conditional on getting. And, as Bono is fond of saying, this is not a cause, but an emergency.
