Zero mile diet - planting and harvesting

I totally agree, its a good time to be growing more food. We're loosing our farming skills as a population, and immaculate lawns are not all that tasty.

Saltspring seeds, Dan Jason's fantastic organization, provides a Zero Mile Diet kit, which contains enough seed to feed a family for a year (if we had the land for it).

This year we made our garden a bit bigger, and we started experimenting
with different crops than just the usuals, getting into micro patches
of quinoa, barley and wheat. Beans in a variety of types, potatoes,
tomatoesm cucumbers, parsnips, carrots, lettuce, squash and leeks were
all on the mene this year.

Its been really rewarding for us to see the seeds turn into dinner. Today I am going to plant the winter garlic (plant in Oct, harvest in April) and put the summer garden to bed.
