Don, a drawing for a meal
On my way home from work, I often see a man with a drawing of a ship or an eagle on a piece of paper asking people to buy it for the price of a meal. I am usually rushing home to take my puppy out for a walk.
This week, I made a change. I asked him how much he charged for the drawing. I am not a big fan of eagle or titanic drawings but it is about more than that. He said it was by donation or whatever I could spare. We agreed I would come back later and he would make a custom drawing for me. We had a little chat and I found out his name was Don.
We have since come by and chatted with Don and gotten to know him better. He lives on the streets, but life was not always that way. I don't know how he got to where he is today, but I have found it very interesting getting to know him and learning from him.
Today, we will go by and see him. We plan on bringing him more paper so he can sell more drawings. He asked not to give him too much paper because if it rained it would get ruined. I have a plastic box that I use for my crafts that would be perfect for protecting the paper from the elements. We will bring him that as well. I asked if he liked banana bread and his face lit up. So, I made some banana bread muffins for him.
I am not sure about this relationship. What will become of it? But, I want to get to know my neighbours and and that most certainly includes Don.

I had an office in Gastown
I had an office in Gastown in the early 80's. I use to walk by a homeless man in the back alley every day. I gave him food and sometimes money, but he was always there. One bright sunny morning, he left Gastown forever. Several years later, I went to Cochrane, Alberta to post an ad in the Cochrane Times when the owner came out to help me. It was the man from the alley. His name was Jack Tennant, and he became one of the best friends I ever had. He did die early, but he picked himself up that sunny morning and changed his world and the world of many around him. I will not forget you Jack Tennant.

Lucinda, Please keep us
Lucinda,
Please keep us updated with Don. I would love to see your drawing and read more about the conversations you have with him. My partner has a few similar relationships with people in the DTES. What comes of these relationships is often delightful and surprising. More people oughta hear about them.
