peru earthquake rescue effort
Dear friends,
As I'm sure you've heard, Peru was struck by a massive 8.0 earthquake on August 15th. Over 500 are dead, more than 1500 injured, and thousands are homeless. President Alan Garcia has declared an emergency situation. Food and water are scarce. An outbreak of diseases is feared. Cold temperatures aggravate the situation.
The immediate challenge is the current recovery operation in process. Support for the longer-term recovery of communities hardest hit by the quake, many of which were impoverished communities along Peru's Pacific coast, will be the next challenge. It will be a long and costly road.
Peruvian Consulates across Canada have set up donation stations and bank accounts in an effort to meet the immediate needs of the survivors: food, water, medicine, clothing, beds... .
If you can spare anything please see details below. Consulate websites have a detailed list of items needed such as clothing, sleeping bags, blankets, tools, shelter (tents, portable beds, etc.) medicine and medical supplies. Monetary donations are also being accepted.

In addition to just donating
In addition to just donating money and food, you can make a direct difference by taking part in a volunteer reconstruction project in Peru!
The company I work for (www.volunteervision.org)just formed a partnership with an NGO in Peru in order to place volunteers where they are needed most. Please consider making a direct difference and explore the possibilities of direct action. Email me at socialnet@volunteervisions.org or look on the website for more information on how you can help.
