No head injuries! ...and hilarity ensues....

I have to admit, when I saw the cruiser bikes lined up that morning at the pancake breaky, I got so nervous I almost decided to back out altogether.  Not only have I not been on a bike for some years, but I've NEVER been on a bike like THAT.<!--break-->

However, I must admit that after getting over the initial gut-wrenching fear of driving a cruiser through downtown Vancouver rush hour traffic, surprisingly the biggest "fraidy-cat" in town is actually becoming accustomed to cycling.  I thought for sure I would not make it home that day.  Indeed, I nearly called the hospital in advance to book a preemptive appointment with a skull-mending specialist of some sort or other.  When I made it home not only intact but feeling good about myself, I was beyond surprised.<!--break-->

My ego was also pumped as no less than five people commented on my bike on my way home!  Hazzah!!<!--break-->

Since that first day, I have ridden my bike to work three times.  Luckily the weather has been good, and I am proud to report that I even rode one time in spitting rain, and it was sort of refreshing.  The biggest moment of hilarity happened when I was unable to find the "onramp" to the Cambie bridge, which prompted me to drive in circles for twenty minutes and then wait on a corner until a good-looking cyclist stopped at the light.  I asked him for directions and he was more than happy to offer his services as "tour guide."  I felt like a dork, but you have to learn somehow, right?<!--break-->

Stay tuned....

Hi Leanne,

I run the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition's commuter cycling skills program. If you're interested in taking one of our free courses, do check out the website. Everyone who takes them talks about their increased skill and confidence levels. We've only got a couple more this summer, but will have about a dozen more classes on offer in September and October. Check back later in the summer for those dates and locations.

Happy cycling!

Bonnie

P.S. We also give away free bike route maps at the classes to help you avoid those embarrassing circles. On the other hand, it can sometimes be fun to leave the map in your bag and have a chat with a stranger ...
