Reusable water bottles

For the past four months I've been wanting to buy a reusable water bottle that isn't made of plastic so badly! Now that school is beginning I know it's something I definitely need and I definitely plan to buy one now.SIGG 1.0L Lifestyle 2007 Series I - Reusable Bottles

I strongly dislike the plastic reusable ones because:

  1. They give water this gross flavour
  2. I'm trying not to buy plastic things, thank you very much
  3. They usually aren't very pretty and support companies that I don't like much
  4. Don't last
  5. Leak WAAAAYYY too much and ruin my papers >.<
  6. Take too long to open and usually hurt my short fingernails

By the way- what do y'all think about the SIGG 1.0L Lifestyle 2007 Series I - Reusable Bottles (it's in the pic)? Let me know!!

So if y'all have any suggestions on reusable water bottles (like any companies or websites you recommend and trust) please please please let me know!

Love and Peace,

Lubna

i recently spent about an hour discussing these bottles with someone who works at MEC. He was somewhat passionate about not using plastic nalgene bottles or the SIGG bottles. apparently they both pose a risk of leeching harmful chemicals into your water. he strongly urged me to consider a stainless steel water bottle which do not pose this risk.

I've purchased a stainless steel bottle from Superstore (see my post about it) for $9.99 plus tax.  I suspect that it's got some plastic on the outside, but it's definitely going to solve my "buying plastic water bottles" habit with its hybrid thermos-water bottle goodness.

Hi everyone,

I too am trying to avoid plastics and just came across this website, I haven't tried the products yet so can't vouch for them but thought I'd put it out there. Hope it helps!

The SIGG has a coating on

Written by Ben Lynch, ND (not verified)

The SIGG has a coating on the inside of the bottle that is baked on and not supposed to come off. However, I wonder if I drop it or leave it in my car on a hot day etc - then what? So I ended up not selling them on my website.

I have seen the lab report regarding the Klean Kanteen and they passed with flying colors.

I used to sell the Polycarbonate bottles but now - they are off of my site.

For great health info that is accurate, check out the Environmental Working Group - http://www.EWG.org

We donate to them monthly and urge you to do as well if you can. They are a highly rated non-profit and for good reason.

Should you want to get a Klean Kanteen, we offer them here:

Remember, the harder the plastic, the more bisphenol A. Do not freeze, heat or place acidic products in plastic.

i heard back from MEC. they have pulled all polycarbonate food and beverage containers effective December 5th.

reading between the lines of their email it sure seemed to me like they were saying, 'yeah we dont feel good about selling this product. there is evidence that it is not safe, we are pulling it from the shelves, and if you want we'll give you a refund for all your nalgenes'

their full statement can be found here

I find it amusing to read

Written by Lesli

I find it amusing to read the riviling tales about how much people hate the plastic water bottles - I remember a few years ago, all the crunchies (including me) were using the Nalgene bottles because it was fashionable and green to do so - showing that environmentally minded people are just as much slaves to fashion as anyone else.

Having said that, the Canadian government has officially declared bisphenol A to be dangerous. Please recycle any plastics used for food or beverage storage that contain BPA. While plastics containing BPA are labelled #7, not all #7's have BPA, so do your research if you're not sure.

Glass for baby

Glass for baby bottles.

For sports bottles go with stainless steel.

Even for other plastic products do you really want trace amounts of an estrogen mimic which is known to affect everything reproductive in your system, sperm reduction, early puberty, early ovulation, breast cancer, prostrate cancer? Especially for mothers I would hope they refrain from any bisphenol plastics AT ALL. Even if you can withstand the assault you would not want to be passing this residue on in breast milk.

Since there are cost competitive alternatives already on the market there just seems no reason at all to use any bisphenol products.

My mom never used plastic

Written by Burcu (not verified)

My mom never used plastic bottles for our milk as babies and always told me never to put any plastic containers in the microwave... moms are always right :) plastics are life-saving & practical in many aspects of our lives, but not for food or water. I believe glass is the safest for a water bottle, even if it isn't the most practical, I'll just be more careful with it. I'm looking for a place that sells glass water bottles, any suggestions?

I use stainless steel sometimes (when I know it will be bashing around in my bag) and when I want to use glass, I use a good old mason jar.

I would have to agree plastic bottle make the water taste gross and also they are not durable - i have broken 2 of them at the gym now - gets costly. In the long run the stainless steel water bottles are the best bet and end up saving you money and also are much healthier. http://www.steelwaterbottles.ca has some good ones for Canadians. Funny thing is in India they have been using stainless steel for ages - in making cups, and Canteens.

Hello,

I sell reusable glass water bottles. Since last August and we haven't had a user that's broken one yet. (However, if you chuck it at a tile floor it will probably break). If you'd like to review the bottle, send me a message. We're totally unique and package a complete solution with a 100% recycled bottle bag and patented ice pack.

Sincerely,
Stephanie Schlosser

Never tried this product but it looks good. Glass water bottles. I think Glass is probably better than stainless steel since it is more inert. Only problem is that you have to be a bit more careful with it. So if you live an active lifestyle the stainless steel would obviously be your best choice. But if you are just taking the bottle back and forth from work and home, the glass one may work in that case.

Glass bottles all the way - I use a large tomato sauce bottle, I don't care how it looks and it does the job, though it can leak a wee bit at times, I just have to be careful to keep it upright. I recently found this site that sells glass water bottles http://sesen.ca/ metal makes the water taste funny and the fine print has all sorts of conditions; you just can't go wrong with glass.
