Biofuel and Gummy bears
You would think that it's depressing that glucose's price has gone up by 30% and is still rising, right? WRONG! It's actually a good thing because instead Haribo (one of a number of companies in the German food and beverage industry) and other companies are planning to do this so they could accommodate the production of biofuel!
Biofuel emits less CO2 than regular gasoline and reduces dependency on energy sources in explosive/volatile regions.
"We're going to maintain current prices through the end of the year," Marco Alfter, a spokesman for Bonn-based gummy bear-maker Haribo, told SPIEGEL. But afterwards, the golden bears could get more expensive.
"The decisive factor will be if the government continues to subsidize the burning of food," said Alfter, referring to government subsidies given to farmers who produce biofuels using crops traditionally used for food.
Prices for palm and canola oil, German beer, tortillas in Mexico, Frosted Flakes in America, wheat, and corn have already increased perilously.
