Vancouver goes on strike...what will this mean for us?

Create personal Zero Waste

I am thinking things might get a bit messy here in Vancouver over the coming weeks. The City of Vancouver employees are all on strike. That means garbage removal personnel, librarians, dog pound workers and summer camp staff to name a few. San Francisco East Bay workers have been on strike since July 02 and it sounds like it is getting messy down there.

I am particularly concerned about the dogs in the pound and the garbage lining the streets (we already have mice at my home and can only imagine what garbage piling up will do to the mouse population) This would be a good time to consider how to create less waste... anybody have any ideas? Thoughts to share about the strike?

I've got a few waste

Written by Lesli

I've got a few waste reduction ideas that are good for any day, not just during job action:

- Bring your reusable coffee cups wherever you go

- Pack your lunch in reusable containers and avoid getting takeout when you can (or eat in to reduce waste)

-  Bring cloth/reusable bags/tote bags to the grocery store/any kind of shopping instead of accepting a plastic bag

-  Buy fruits and vegetables as you need them to cut down on organic waste

-  Rinse/clean packaging and containers before putting them in the garbage to cut down on pests getting at them

-  Leave containers with deposits on them (e.g. beverage containers) outside recycling bins to make them easily accessible for binners

-  Choose products packed in reusable/recyclable containers (e.g. milk in plastic or glass bottles; items wrapped in paper instead of plastic)

-  Rinse and save for recycling whatever packaging you can (paper labels on tins, cardboard cereal boxes, plastic bottles that do not carry a deposit)

-  Put all purchases to the "do I really need this" test (food, drink, items, whatever) to minimize unnecessary consumption, package disposal and waste

  Just to clarify, the SF

Just to clarify, the SF garbage strike has been going since July second, not July of 2002. Just thought I'd clarify. Can you imagine how a five year garbage strike would really get people to rethink their use of consumer goods? God Gawd.
