On Wednesday, April 4th, 2007, from 7:00 – 9:00 pm, at the Vancouver Museum, Terry Tamminen, California Governor Schwarzenegger's environmental advisor, will be conducting a reading and discussion on his newest book, ‘Lives Per Gallon: The True Cost of Our Oil Addiction’.

Terry Tamminen was previously the head of the California Environmental Protection Agency, and a former state cabinet secretary. His book, "Lives Per Gallon: The True Cost of Our Oil Addiction" is an excellent read that offers a first hand, passionate, fact-packed overview of the undeniable evidence against Big Oil while calling for new energy policies to shift away from fossil fuel dependency and promote conservation.

Highlighted with numerous statistics, each chapter examines our fossil fuel dependency in real cost -- not just through dollars and cents, but in compromised health resulting from exposure to toxic air pollution, environmental degradation, social injustice, and instability provoked by the pursuit of oil.

Although this is a free event, seating is limited, so please contact Kristi Rivait to RSVP and for further information.

I went to this talk, and it

Written by EnviroWoman

I went to this talk, and it was quite interesting. He certainly has credible credentials, so I'm inclined to believe what he says.

I'm reading his book now....and not that I'm into 'conspiracy theories' but wow, his arguments for relating the activities of oil companies with those of tobacco companies to encourage oil addiction in the human population really makes you stop and think.

He tells the true story of National City Lines (a shell company formed by GM, Standard Oil, Phillips Petroleum, Firestone Tire and Mac Truck back in 1922) and their strategy for methodically buying the electric-rail mass transit systems in 45 US cities, ripping them up, and replacing them with asphalt and trains and buses made and fueled by the partners...was truely jaw-dropping. All to make the American population dependent on oil and build their businesses. Despite the fact the electric rail system was more efficient, cleaner and less expensive to operate than the diesel powered buses which it was replaced by.

I've never really thought about our use of oil as an 'addiction' but he's really got me thinking - maybe it is. And just maybe, so is our use of plastic.
