got socks?

A few months after its launch, ChangeEverything and the people that make up the community here, made a difference in the lives of some people living on the streets of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside with successful drive for warm clothing during a particularly bitter cold snap. Since 2006 we have used ChangeEverything.ca to collect thousands and thousands of items of warmth for folks living in the DTES of Vancouver..
Cold wet feet are a huge reason people living on the street get sick and even die in the winter. Getting clean dry socks to local shelters is a great way to help alleviate this problem. So this year we are focusing on socks!
So start looking through your closets and drawers. We’ll take mis-matched socks that are clean and in good condition. But even better, we’ll take ones that you went out and bought especially for this purpose. Reply with a comment on this post if you have leads on enormous quantities of socks, or if you just have a few pairs or even one pair to give. Each pair will totally make a difference. It’s true. Believe it.
I am also working on having a Vancity “Got Socks” account opened. Watch this space.
Kate
PS -oh and please spread the word. tweet this. add it to your facebook. emai your friends about it, heck post it to your fridge! see if your kids want to take up a collection at school for socks. whatever you can think of, the wackier the better.

This is a great idea
This is a great idea Kate...practical and thoughtful. It will really help some of the folks that have to face the cold this winter. Putting on a nice pair of clean, warm socks is something we normally take for granted.

The HR Division has taken on
The HR Division has taken on the "Got Socks" pledge by dividing up into four teams for a four week challenge ending on December 11. The teams are: Team Converse, Team Ballerina, Team Mary Jane and Team Cowboy. At the end of week one, HR had collected 77 pairs of socks combined, with Team Converse in the lead with 39 pairs. The day after our "week one" stats went out, Team Cowboy responded with a donation of 132 pairs... looks like week two will be very interesting! The HR Division sends out a challenge to all other Division's within the Vancity Group – let us know how and what your teams are doing.

I am so excited and thrilled
I am so excited and thrilled that so many people are taking part in 'Got Socks? '09'
I just put together 'Got Socks' kits for each and every one of Vancity branches so people can bring their spare socks into the branches and take part! They'll arrive tomorrow so please visit your local branch and check it out! (remember to bring a pair of socks)
It is crazy and wonderful to me to think that this campaign that was invented on a snow day three winters ago as I sat at my dining room table in my pj's and slippers has now grown to such a big thing. It warms my heart to be able to lead this each year (now our 4th year!)
please spread the word and help collect as many socks as possible!
thanks

I am happy to report that
I am happy to report that the warm clothing/sock drive is underway at our place of business.
All it took was an encouraging email and a few empty boxes set up in a neutral space and the donations have been rolling in.
We also challenged our bosses to match all sock donations; I am happy to report that they have graciously accepted this offer.
I encourage others to start a warm clothing/sock drive at their place of work. What good is coming from unused clothing sitting in the back of the closet? Start a movement and get it donated to such a crucial cause!
FYI- Costco has packages of warm, durable socks for about a dollar a pair.
Thanks Kate!

Final update on HR's "Got
Final update on HR's "Got Socks" initiative!
Way to Go! HR's final total = 749 socks!!!!!
I was excited when we passed the 100 mark … but to have received 749 socks from our division of our size is OUTSTANDING!!!! As suspected, Team Mary Jane was holding out for week #4, and ended the campaign with a whopping 310 socks – congratulations to team Mary Jane .
Congratulations to all of us! It makes me feel very happy to think of all the people we will have helped keep a little bit warmer and dryer this winter.
Thank you to everyone for all your participation!
Happy Holidays!

Hey Kate, Here's the post
Hey Kate,
Here's the post on our blog. I've also set up a facebook group for this and we are call Spare Some Socks. If this is success, we might be looking into making this a permanent group and collect socks year round by doing various sock drives a year and rounding them up for winter.
So here's the post on my kindness blog, www.bekind2movement.org.
Thanks for doing such a wonderful thing Kate.
Francis
My wife, Joanna and I are starting a sock drive for the homeless in Vancouver. Our goal is to collect 1,000 pairs of socks by Christmas this year.
The reason why we decided to do a sock drive was because we met a pastor of a church last year that we helping to paint a mural for their community bath house. In our chats, he had told us that there was a huge need of socks for the homeless.
Hence this year, we are collecting socks for the homeless so that they can brave through the winter with warmth.
If you are in the Greater Vancouver area and have socks to donate, please let me know by sending me an email at francisheng@bekind2movement.org and we can work out the coordination.
You can also leave a comment at the bottom and I will get in touch with you.
We accept clean socks, new or used, even if they are mismatched.
Thank you for your help in advance.
Francis
