Sharkwater: http://www.sharkwater.com A FREE MUST SEE documentary
Every year tens of millions of sharks are killed because of finning, the cruel practice of slicing off a shark's valuable fins for soup and tossing the body back to sea alive. Sharkwater is amust-see documentary about the situation.
See Sharkwater on the big screen in honour of Ocean's Month from June 19 to 30, courtesy of the Vancouver Aquarium and World Wildlife Fund. Go to http://www.sharkwater.com for details about this award-winning action/adventure film by Rob Stewart. (4 and 7 pm at the Park Theatre. It's FREE!) .
Sharks whose fins are hacked off are unable to swim and are left to either starve to death or be eaten alive by other fish. Finning has now become so widespread that many species of sharks, which have existed since before there were dinosaurs and pre-date humans by millions of years, are now facing possible extinction.
In his first feature documentary, filmmaker Rob Stewart reveals that sharks have far more reason to fear us than we do them. Scientists estimate that in the past 50 years, the shark population has declined a staggering 90 percent, thanks to factors like irresponsible fishing practices and the lucrative “shark finning” trade, where millions of sharks are killed each year for shark-fin soup, a popular Chinese delicacy.
