The next hearing on two huge Vancouver Island fish farms is May 27. Write now to urge that the licenses be denied. Cut and paste the letter below, which references the Georgia Strait Alliance's detailed submission. Go to http://www.georgiastrait.org/?q=node/872 directly if you need more info before writing. But write! Now! Tell your friends.

Here's the letter you can cut and paste, and send to planning@strathconard.ca, jlong@strathconard.ca

Dear Strathcona Regional District planners,

I have written to you in this matter before, but I understand the issue is still pending. Grieg Seafood is applying for two large new open net-cage salmon farms near Sayward in Sunderland Channel, at Yorke Island and Gunner Point. The next hearing is May 27. Each of these new farms would add 4400 MT of farmed salmon production in an area already experiencing elevated levels of sea lice.

Our wild salmon populations are dwindling. There is overwhelming scientific and historical evidence that open-net fish farming is a big part of the problem, yet the government and regional planners continue to allow the expansion of these businesses. This must stop.

I refer you, for complete, citizen and scientific, details to the submission made by the Georgia Strait Alliance in opposition to these two farms at http://www.georgiastrait.org/?q=node/858

Please, think about long term ecological, environmental, and economic health of the region, and do not allow these open-net business to spread pollution and disease for economic gain. There are better ways to grow and have a healthy economy.

Regards,

This is the sad reality.

Written by JamesR

This is the sad reality. Climate change is causing a lot of burdens to our environment. Not only does it lessens our access to organic foods but this also leads to thousands of communicable diseases across the world. The climate changes and global warming have a lot of effects on our health. Not only humans but also other living things like the animals. The animals are the common reservoir of these communicable diseases causing a great burden on the health of human beings. Just to give you a brief update, a beef recall is going on right now. The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service, or FSIS has initiated a beef recall of almost 100,000 pounds of beef that has been tainted with e. coli bacteria; or rather the harmful strain of the bacterium. E.coli is mostly harmless, in fact beneficial, but one of the bovine strains is harmful to humans. The company may need some harm money loans or microloans to keep afloat during the recall. Food recall news, especially of meat recalls, gives vegetarianism adherents even more credence. Valley Meats of Illinois shipped the bad beef, and are the company that will need the faxless payday loan to pay for the beef recall.

Hi James,

I agree with all you've said. You might want to check out, if you don't know it already, a powerful video on factory farming, and learn what we can do: http://www.themeatrix.com/inside/

Pass it around widely, to your networks.
