Calling on MPs to protect Fraser River Sockeye migration -- NOW!
The Wild Salmon Circle is calling for urgent action this week to protect this year’s out migrating Fraser sockeye. The grassroots citizen’s group is asking the public to call on opposition MPs to stand up for wild salmon in Ottawa – before parliament shuts down again for spring break. To contact your MP, please follow this link: http://www.wildsalmoncircle.com/government/
Here's a sample letter:
Honourable XXXX,,
This year’s Fraser sockeye smolts have begun their annual migration out to sea, passing dozens of salmon farms – which surely are contributing to the collapse of these vital wild salmon runs.
A group of prominent conservation groups, scientists, and First Nations is calling for the immediate clearing of a particularly important sockeye migration pathway where smolts are highly vulnerable to sea lice and diseases from five farms in the Wild Salmon Narrows near Campbell River.
While the impending Cohen Judicial Inquiry is set to examine the possible connection between farms and sockeye collapse, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) continues to deny a connection in spite of evidence to the contrary.
Canada is committed to the Precautionary Principle, which requires that we take this threat seriously. Experts believe clearing the Wild Salmon Narrows could make an enormous difference to the survival of this year’s Fraser sockeye smolts.
In spite of the urgency of this issue, it is not being discussed in Ottawa. Please use all your power and influence to raise this issue in parliament this week, and get some action to save this year's outmigrating smolts.
Thank you for your consideration and action,
