Daylight savings is just ridiculous

Try out Change Everything

Daylight savings time is a classic misguided scheme to fiddle with things that shouldn't fiddled with in the name of some short-sighted goal. It's confusing. It messes with the body's natural rythyms. It causes car accidents, missed appointments and numerous other headaches. Let's scrap this hare-brained idea now.

John, I couldn't agree with

John, I couldn't agree with you more! There has never been a convincing argument regarding the continued practice of DST. And the most cockamamie reason is that "it's good for farmers during harvest". Given that most farmers, even small family-run businesses, generally have state-of-the-art equipment that allows them to harvest all night, how can this be true? Besides, Saskatchewan, home of the Canadian breadbasket, does not use DST... so you think the farmers there would have something to say about it!

Anyway, please continue to rant away, my friend. And if there's a way to actually STOP this practice, I'm happy to help.

The more I think about this

Written by Kate

The more I think about this one, the more I want to do something about it. But what? Should we start a letter writing campaign? And to whom would we address the letters?

I think spreading the word about the accidents (see wikipedia article John mentions in the above post) is a good start - but let's do something about it.

In Canada the time is a provincial issue, funny enough, not federal.  So I guess you would contact the Government in Victoria, perhaps through your MLA.

According to the Wiki article cited, BC has commited to match the US dates starting in 2007. (also other provinces are going that route as well)  That means the changes will take place 2nd week in March and first Sunday in November.  Saskatchewan and Newfoundland will continue to use the April and October dates, unless they change their plans.

This is not really an issue for me personally.  The arguments to change it are not really any more convincing than the arguments to have DST in my opinion.

But that's just my opinion, so go for it!

I think ending daylight

Written by Melodies in Mind

I think ending daylight savings time can build a stronger connection between us and the patterns of the universe. Instead of controlling time for our convenience, we would be going with the natural patterns of daylight and adjusting our schedules to accomidate the world clock rather than accomidating our schedules by adjusting our fake clocks.

I'm interested in getting rid of the clock all together and using instincts, sundials, and observation. The clock creates feelings of anxiety because it is so measurable.

By the same token, one might argue that you should not travel quickly across time zones, primarily thinking about long-leg air travel. That has a much greater affect than on bio-rhythms that a measly one-hour time change once a year (the spring change actually adding an hour of sleep thereby making most people more well rested than other days).

Missing appointments? How many appointments do people really have a couple of Sunday mornings a year? Is DST really that hard to figure out? I don't know anyone that has ever had a problem with this.

There are benefits to daylight savings time, not least of which is that by alligning our standard work day to the daylight hours we can reduce the amount of energy we use (fewer lights need to be on for fewer hours, heating can be kept lower etc). The recent adjustments to when we change the clocks has been in order to encourage that energy reduction.

Is there any active movement

Is there any active movement to eliminate Daylight Saving's Time? I've always intensely HATED it. In the summer, when it's so hot, I want the sun to go down early so we can start being cooler. Makes absolutely no sense to have the daylight out longer during the hot months. Hooray for Standard Time. Let's keep standard all year!!!
