“Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending."
Internet represents a giant source of information, the collective mind where we can find almost anything. Every connected user contributes to its "wisdom" or informational capacity. Therefore, Internet obtainsthe features of a public good. The interesting side is that information we need is being brought to us by intermediaries - search engines, which are mainly private companies. These companies are filtering (indexing) the web (say our computers) and maintain their databases, which afterwards are closed to public and become the property of that search engine companies. Taking into account the enormous effort and resources that a private company needs to invest to able to maintain such large database, one can understand why this sector is almost monopolized by mature stakeholders. Another inherent problem is the possible distortion of information. Since the database is closed, how one can be sure that he gets the best search results? By the way, I love Google and use it everyday but the question is that I want to control him, not vice-versa! Internet is doomed to be decentralized and deconcentrated by its veryarchitecture. The current situation is just the opposite. Highly centralized and commercialized search is almost creating a "crowd psychology" among the Internet users. The remedy to this one-way-only search can be the creation of open, publicly created information databases which then would provide an access to any search engines, by this ensuring the non-partisan and high quality search. With the help of people, for the people let us create a kind of an orginazation that will enable Internet users to have a control over the flow of information and will discourage any monopolistic attempts. Summarizing, I would like to note – just as the state systems have transformed from absolute monarchies to republics, internet should become the WWW Democracy, that is the only inevitable future of Internet. The only way to get there is search revolution.By the way , a very interesting approach is offerd by OMFICA , a non profit orginazation, (www.omfica.org). According to them, the idea of decentralization is quite possible even in the Internet.
