Operation Roots

There were 2174 homeless people in the Greater Vancouver area as of March 5, 2006. Homelessness is a provincial and countrywide issue that needs to be addressed. Homelessness affects a wider section than can be imagined, it includes aboriginals, the mentally ill, drug addicts, senior citizens, single moms, families and kids.

The need to deal with homelessness is recognized by all levels of government, private industries (read Peter Simpson CEO of Greater Vancouver Builders Association (Province Newspaper October 28), churches, advocacy groups and concerned people who want to make a difference and bring love, acceptance and care into the communities.

" In BC, research estimates the cost of homelessness to government health care, social and justice systems at $30,000 to $40,000 per person per year. (Housing matters B C – Ministry responsible for housing)

This project’s goal is to build a sustainable environment consisting of a 3to 5 hectares of land with 30 shelters i.e. cabins, campers or mobile homes to house as many homeless people as would be warm and comfortable in the available space.

The homeless people will grow organic food to sell either at farmer’s market or off site. Leaders in the homeless community will manage the whole program. Growing food needs discipline, care and love, is healing and builds self-esteem.

Let all of us be loving, caring, embrace the whole community and set a goal of no homeless people in Canada by 2010.

Your participation and contribution to this cause will be much appreciated by everyone involved with this project.

I am teaching about the issue of homelessness in my employability skills course here in New Brunswick, and am curious to know whether this project has been implemented. It sounds like an excellent idea. I wonder if it would be possible to sustain, given the problems with addiction and mental health for the people involved. It is, in my opinion, a creative way to solve a difficult and complicated problem that needs to be addressed.

As a Canadian and citizen of the world, I appreciate the work that you are doing.
