Other than the sideshow about B.C. Rail, we’re fast approaching the predictable standoff whereby Gordon Campbell’s Liberals position themselves as strong on economic growth and the only safe hands on the economy, while demonizing Carole James’s New Democrats as spendthrift reds under the bed.

Environment and economy discussion at BC Assembly of First Nations

A-in-chut (Shawn Atleo), BC Regional Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, invited representatives of the nonprofit sector, labour and business to participate in a panel discussion on the environment and economy at their annual conference held in Nanaimo.

Ian Gill, President of Ecotrust Canada; Jim Sinclair, President of the BC Federation of Labour; and Milton Wong, philanthropist and businessman, provided remarks to the audience of some 200 First Nations leaders.

Buzz Holling wins 2008 Volvo Environment Prize

The Volvo Environment Foundation awards its 2008 environment prize to Crawford "Buzz" Holling, a member of Ecotrust Canada's board of directors and one of ecology's great integrative thinkers for his pioneering lifetime work on ecosystem dynamics, transformation and resilience, and adaptive management.

First Nations are in a strong position to negotiate equity investments in micro-hydro projects in their traditional territories, says Managing Director Pieter van Gils.

Van Gils, Managing Director of Ecotrust Canada Capital, gave a presentation to a forum hosted by the Aboriginal Business Services Network on Nov. 27 in Vancouver about Aboriginal investment opportunities in micro-hydro power projects in BC.

Ric Young speaks on the emerging field of social innovation

Ric Young, President of E.Y.E, a Toronto-based agency specializing in strategies that promote social change, speaks on social innovation to Ecotrust Canada's board and staff in Vancouver.

Young, a member of Ecotrust Canada's board of directors, gave his talk on December 1, 2008, explaining how even small groups of people and organizations can effect widespread transformative change in society.

Young has been the architect of numerous campaigns for change and social innovation projects in areas ranging from health, environmental sustainability and ethics in sport, to citizen engagement, corporate social responsibility, community development and global humanitarian relief.
