On Thursday, September 22nd cohorts of the 2010 Bologna program visited a few different non-for profit organizations in the downtown east side. One of those organizations was Eastside Movements for Business and Economic Renewal Society also known as EMBERS.
EMBERS assists in personal business development of inner-city individuals who have a desire to start small business and social enterprises. The non-for-profit agency offers one-one business coaching; self-employment training, personal business development plans. However they also offer a lot of tough lessons. As they explained to us in their presentation; they have compassion and understanding for people coming from various situations but they also only have a certain amount of tolerance. They have a lot of stories to share about all the very many people that have gone through the EMBERS program and are now successful self-sufficient business owners.
Since EMBERS needs capital to continue providing services, they also have a business that they run. They have a temp agency that provides labour employees to companies around Vancouver. Due to the great training EMBERS provides to their workers, a lot of the time, these employees end up getting full time positions at companies they temped at.
One more successful non-for profit organization that provides assistance and helps people get back on their feet and reach their dreams.

Thanks for sharing this story Dragana. I am so happy to hear that the 2010 Bologna participants are doing visits to local organizations. I'm also jealous. Can the 2009ers tag along?

I met someone from EMBERS recently and was extremely impressed with them. Didn't they get work with the Olympics?
