Eat Local and Organic

I'm reading Barbara Kingsolver's "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle", about her sojourn into growing food and eating local with her family for a year. It's entertaining, extremely well-researched, down-to-earth :) and terrifically inspiring.

I stopped eating meat and unsustainable seafood years ago - and have been slowly switching to organic dairy. This has prompted me to try to be local, organic and seasonal (within reason - I haven't been able to give up Nutella yet :)

Though I'm missing sweet red peppers and bananas, I have a new-found appreciation for beets (baked in slices with pesto!), cabbage and organic yogurt.

Future actions for me include:
• checking out the winter farmer's market at the Wise Hall
• planting my own veggie garden this spring (so I can have the stuff I'm missing next year)
• and trying to make my own cheese (which, apparently, is dead easy).

Even if you're not ready to make the switch, check out the book. She's a great write and the whole family contributes, including some yummy recipes.
