I convinced London Drugs on Granville Street to stock recycled toilet paper

Facial Tissue

3 months ago I asked the London Drugs on Granville Street to stock recycled toilet paper. They never did. Last week I spoke to the manager and made the same request. At first he responded that recycled toilet paper didn't exist. I told him I was able to buy it from their Hastings Street store.

He then changed his tune, and said because they had such a small store there wasn't room to stock recycled toilet paper, and no one would buy it. I said- oh so you did stock it before?

He said yes they had done tests but no one bought it.

I said- times are changing. Perhaps you should try stocking it again.

So he took my phone number and agreed to bring in some packages. i just got the call that they have arrived.

I'm going to go buy as package from them tomorrow and I think it would be great if anyone who has the chance go there and make the same request.

Ideally it would be the only kind they should stock in a small store.

Update: I got the call that the toilet paper was in last week- however when I called today to confirm they told me it was sold out but they would have some on their shelves for this Friday. You need to call (604) 448-4802 to confirm that they have it.

They say the yare still watching to see if it will sell- since they have such small stock space. But if enough people say they want it as a permanent fixture- they can't (shouldn't) refuse.

A great crusade.  Thanks

A great crusade.

Thanks for your initiative Dawn. Please let me know if this brand has any plastic in the packaging. I'm on the hunt for toilet paper/kleenex that doesn't use plastic packaging (or at the very minimum biodegradable plastic). Thanks for the great link to Top Green Brands. That's gonna come in handy.

Next up -- convincing the office to stop using paper towels for people to wipe their hands on.  Shake it off, wipe it off in your hair, use your shirt, whatever... your hands will dry.

Good on you Dawn! A good example of "Think globally, act locally." I would encourage anyone who lives in Vancouver, to visit London Drugs and exercise purchasing power. Thank you for this good news story. When an activist does something like this, I feel so grateful as it feels like they are doing something directly beneficial for me and my children. And my children's children  (ad infinitumm.)

Well I do think the old fasioned fabric towel dispenser - on a giant loop- the kind that gets washed by the company that mangages it- is a better option that wiping one's hands on one's hair.

There actually is a sanitary aspect to drying one's hands that is important to abide by.

awesome! I live in gastown, and regularly shop at L.Drugs on Granville Street. I'll make a point of purchasing the recycled stuff from now on. Thanks for your effort!

Good for you! I always find this an interesting issue, if people made that one change it would make such a difference (not using trees for toilet paper).

In Indonesia almost no one uses toilet paper (rurally anyway), they consider it unhygenic. They pour water with one hand and wash with the left, which is why they never eat with their left hand! Although it's a bit problematic for those in the food service sector. With proper handwashing practices it is a viable alternative to toilet paper for some.

Hey there I have been taking

Hey there I have been taking care of the back office tasks using 100% recycled toilet paper I use CASCADES brand. I have been getting it from the local grocery store - BUY RIGHT. I have been trying to find it at Save on Foods and SuperStore. CASCADES also makes 100% recycled paper towel as well. Hey did you know The pentagon uses, on average, about 666 rolls of toilet paper every day. I guess that explains some of crappy decisions they have made in the past

Written by sherrett

I tried to get Zellers to stock recycled toilet paper over a year and a half ago. I filled in one of their customer feedback cards and am still waiting to hear back.

Here’s my story of stalking recycled tissue at Zellers.

I'd love to. But I haven't been back to one of their stores in the year and a half since I sought the recycled toilet paper.

It's a toss up whether recycled toilet paper makes less environmental impact than the regular sort. More unrecycled toilet paper means more wetlands converted into cottonwood fields (usually what's used to make toilet paper. No of course they don't make it from trees - this is cheaper). Recycled toilet paper requires huge amounts of bleach, which invariably leaks out into the ecosystem. So, which do you want? Destruction of habitat, or poisoning of habitat? Use less toilet paper!

Great post!

Even though it is a year later, I also blogged about recycled TP about the same time. I found some in Toronto, but it was individually wrapped and very expensive (almost $1/roll!).

I used the GP shopping guide to find me a good alternative.

I've also stopped using paper towel and tissues. I use cloth rags and handkerchiefs now.

Go green!
