ChangeSomething... Bloodbath at Mercy's Reach Rabbit Refuge

Try out Change Everything

Mercy's Reach Rabbit Refuge is a non-profit society acting on behalf of abandoned and unwanted pet rabbits, not only in Langley, but across Canada. They have reduced the number of feral rabbits by literally thousands over the past 2 years, which significantly reduces the threat to local farmers and their land. They have also taken on the overflow from other rescues such as the SPCA, LAPS, RAPS, and more, and currently share space with SARS.
With over $30 000 of retirement invested in the shelter at Country Feeds, the group is financially tapped, and there is no government support beyond the generous grant from the Langley Township. On September 4th, a young mink from a local farm broke into the shelter and began brutally killing the herd. Thanks to quick thinking by 2 SARS representatives, the attack was stopped at 2 rabbits, but resulted in an emergency evacuation until the shelter can be fortified. It will cost approximately $5000 to accomplish this task before the rabbits have to be moved in 3 weeks. The group is in dire need of community support, both in volunteer hours and finance. PLEASE give generously to the Hazel & Bea Memorial Building Fund. Call Muriel at 604.530.3297. They can offer tax receipts for any donation over $10. If you cannot afford to give at this time, please be sure to vote for us to win Vancity's contest worth $1000 towards fortifying our shelter so we can bring our rabbits back home and make them available for adoption, once again. We need wire mesh, lumber, railway ties, tools, supplies and good, strong backs. This contest would just bring us that much closer to a safer shelter.

Thanks Bonnie, for bringing this important story to the public.  The whole aim of the shelter is to care for the unwanted bunnies, finding them a new loving home, & to start an education program for the children, teaching them empathy for animals & each other.   The volunteers work tirelessly - there is still so much to do.  So please, everyone, support them in any way you can - the deadline is looming, to get the shelter up & running again -  they need funds, materials & lots of strong volunteers to help.   When this is done,  attention can once again be directed to their education program,  going to the schools to do workshops & taking some of their beautiful bunnies to Senior Homes for visits.  Contact the phone number given, to offer donations of any kind.

Bonnie;

  I was so devastated to hear about the Mink incident at your refuge.  My stomach is still churning at what happened.  I am keeping everything crossed that the money comes in to refortify your shelter in honour of Bea and Hazel.

I have visitted Mercy's Reach, and they are quite a helpful bunch. Just a handful of volunteers doing all that work! I am certainly going to donate to this wonderful organization, which not only helps abused rabbits, but educates people on taking care of them.

Wow, I'm quite impressed. These volunteers in very small numbers do so much for the community. After suffering such a loss, this organization (which not only helps abused rabbits, but educates people as well) deserves some generous donations. I know I'll do my part.

So many thanks are needed

So many thanks are needed for the volunteers that spend countless hours caring for and financially supporting these adorable, adoptable and quite often forgotten, abandoned and abused animals. Please take the time to visit the shelter and/or donate financially!!
