Small Business composting

Written by blackgold

Hey everyone,

I am creating a business that will collect food waste from businesses that want to be more sustainable and stop dumping food waste into landfills.

I am looking for businesses (and people) interested on changing this so if anyone wants more information on how this would work contact BlackGold Food Waste & Compost Services at elmufino@yahoo.ca -

Treating food as garbage is one of the reasons we have to import food and create space to dump more garbage. Landfill usage promotes anaerobic decomposition of the material we put there. In the case of organic material, even food waste that is easily compostable takes years if not decades to decompose using valuable land space that could be used for truly unusable materials.

Compost is the ultimate goal for businesses' by-products as it has the ability to create and strengthen communities (ask community gardeners), create local food and reduce costs of living in our cities.

We are working on a website and things are already starting to happen.

Talk to you soon

Juan,

You might wish to contact Matt Mephan in Victoria . His business is called Community Composting. He offers a service (for a fee) to homeowners whose food and garden waste is collected monthly and its then collected and composted for them. each month he leaves behind a bag of compost.

Matt does not compost himself but off loads to those who do

Also Jason Adams of ReFuse collects restaurant, college and university food waste from Victoria and composts it in commercial facility in Cobble Hill.

The CRD has just launched a pilot green box curbside food waste pick up program in Oak Bay. The material is brought to our ICC in-vessel regional composting facility in Nanaimo - (untill such time as we buiild a plant in Victoria.) This pilot in the CRD emulates a similar one we are involved with in Ladysmith.

Also try contacting Andre LaRiviere of the Green Table Project in Vancouver. His initiative is designed to help restauranteurs lessen their footprint -composting is part of that. He may wish to know about your plansMy company receives food waste from 41 restaurants and three supermarkets. The issues are hauling, finding a composter who is licenced to operate and setting a fee for your service that is sufficient to cover the tipping fees you incurr in offloading clients waste if you re not composting yourself.
