DONT IDLE YOUR CAR

Many times a day I stop people from idling their automobiles.

Today on Main Street a company was running the engine of several of their cars, belching lots of smog (there was fog today, no wind, and the smog hung at ground level) and I called the anti-idling department at. 604-257-2404 to get enforcement on the scene and to stops the idling cars.

In another recent incident, I was in Oakridge Mall and called the police, because the owner of a car was running the car and went shopping in the mall. The police arrived and gave the person a ticket.

I encourage everybody in the city to not run there cars if they are stopped even at the traffic light.

If the care is parked more than a 10 seconds, according to David Suzuki, the engine should be shut of.

We need air to breath since we have less tree.

This planet need everybody's support in this.

Thanks

i get frustrated when people idle their cars, too. the ferry lineup is especially heartbreaking. we should come up with some sort of hand signal (that is friendly!) to remind people to turn off their cars!

If only we could make a bumper sticker.  But then that would be wasteful as well :(

You could just wait until your car gets really dirty, then use your finger to write "please stop idling your car" -- an environmentally friendly car ad, in more ways than one!

Hello Kate:

Yes, I ask to drivers in ferry line ups to shut off their engines. The ferry parking lots didn't always have the "no idling" signs that they do now.

Last year I walked around and spoke to them nicely and than I mentioned to them if they could turn of ftheir cars while waiting for the ferry.

At the same time, people who saw me doing this made friends with me. Once, a group of women I approched thought that I was very gutsy to talk to the people stop running there engines.

Then, they made friends with me. Last year, I acutally went to one of the ladies' wedding.

Two weeks ago I talked to a neighbour. He was waiting for somebody running his car.

Three weeks ago I talked to a Mount Pleasant Resident to turn of his engine while waiting for his party.

You also suggested a signal to motorists: How about PINCHING YOUR NOSE while flashing the PEACE SIGN with your other hand at the same time?

I LOVE THIS HAND SIGNAL!

This morning on my way to work, I found myself asking a man who had stopped his pick up truck and left it idling while he repaired a parking meter, if he'd turn off his engine. He gave me a big toothy grin, and said, "of course!" it was very gratifying

Hello Kate:

Good for you that you did it!!!! Yes,it does feel gratifying.

I am doing this talking to people about idling since 1987. I do it many times in a week.

I stopped somebody idling today as well on Columbia and third Avenue.

They looked surprised but they stopped running the car engine.

On my way to the audition today I stopped at the speakers corner and mentioned about idling on camera. It might be on breakfast TV tomorrow morning.

Will see!!!

Wearing a mouth mask gives also a lot of attention regarding pollution.

I put on my mouth mask if somebody is not responding. This is a powerful statement without any harm.

Peace

It didn't work so well for

Written by BobN3489 (not verified)

It didn't work so well for me today. I was eating lunch in a park near work when some cleanup truck came driving on the pedestrian path. He put it in park and 3 guys got up to pick up trash. But it sat there idling for 5 minutes, spewing exhaust in the faces of people sitting there. What was the point?

Then he moved it up like 30 feet, right in front of my bench, and jumped out again, leaving it on. Since I was ready to go anyway, I asked the driver, "Do you really need to leave the engine running?" I thought I was being nice in my tone, but you would have thought I said, "Your mom's a hooker," because he exploded with "Mind your own business. Don't bother me. etc."

I tried to make the point "Is it really so hard to turn the key?" (Yes, it is, he informed me). His defense: "None of these other people complained." Well, of course they didn't. They were afraid to. In the end it was just a waste of my time. How can you get through to such people?
