Energy efficient light bulbs

Written by Amber

I realized this morning that I don't yet have energy efficient light bulbs in every socket of my home! Not only am I spending more money than I need to on my power bill, I am needlessly contributing to global warming because of it!

I'm changing all of my lightbulbs to be more efficient and am going to encourage others to do the same!

By doing this, I also heard that you will be increasing the mecury pollution by some astronmical number, since the neon bulbs contain mercury vapour, and this is much worse than the emmsions effect.  Does anyone have any facts on that?

Manufacturers have been working hard to reduce Mercury content but most (not all) standard flourescent and CFL bulbs contain small amounts of mercury, less than you would find in many batteries. Unfortunately its hard to tell which ones do and which ones don't contain it, so its best to assume they all do. The switch is definitely more beneficial than the risk.

My biggest frustration is how poorly they fit available fixtures. I'm hoping lamp manufacturers start to catch on to the fact people want fixtures that fit CFL bulbs.

In any event, the bulbs are safe until you dispose of them. So it would be a concern if everyone throws them in the regular trash.  But, the bulbs generally last a long time, claims are 5 years but I've found these claims to be exaggerated, so we should have a little time to sort this out.

The key is to ensure that you dispose of the bulbs properly. Ikea and other places (possibly home depot I'm not certain) will take the bulbs and dispose of them properly for you. I'm still looking for a place to recycle halogen bulbs.

I hope that clears things up
