I'm amazed we don't hear more about the economic arguments in favour of equal marriage rights. It's a huge source of competitive advantage that Canada offers gay couples the same legal rights as straight couples -- just think about how much easier it makes it for Canadian companies to recruit and retain talented gay employees.

Here are a few, off the top of my head:
- Tourism: Lesbian and gay couples come to Canada to get married.
- Labour force: Allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry makes Canada a more attractive place for them to live in. That, in turn, increases the pool of talented people employers can draw on.
- Innovation and entrepreneurship: Richard Florida has identified a "creative class" that he suggests is critical for the economic and social development of cities in the 21st-century economy. There are many factors attracting that class -- but one of the keys is an atmosphere that embraces sexual diversity.
